Kanana Camp - Luxury Tented Camp in Botswana

Kanana meaning “paradise” in the local language, is located approximately 35 flying minutes north of Maun and is situated in a private concession area on the fringes of the permanent Delta. Eight luxury-style tents with en suite facilities are built on stilts overlooking the open floodplains. The camp itself is built among the spectacular shade trees of ebony, knob thorn and sausage tree., whilst the dining and sitting areas are raised on decking encircling a massive ancient fig tree.The area is alive with birds and for those who just want to sit and realx in camp – bird watching will be well rewarded. This flowing main area is split into three sections: there are two comfortable seating areas, each with comfy sofas and a selection of coffee-table books. One of these incorporates the bar, which is really simply a sideboard containing a selection of spirits and wines, and a wooden cupboard housing a large fridge from which guests can help themselves at any time.

The camp borders onto the Moremi Game Reserve, Kanana's environment is a mix of forests and open plains, combined with permanent channels and lush flood meadows - an excellent walking and canoeing venue. While game viewing in 4x4 vehicles is very popular, one can best experience this region by viewing game on foot or by gliding silently through the delta by Mokoro canoe. It is a moving and incredible experience, Besides the elephant, a wide variety of other game frequent the life-giving force of the Delta, including lion, lechwe, hippo,impala and crocodile.

The Camp is pretty unique in that it is nearby a fantastic heronry where many migratory water birds come to roost and breed every year, from July onwards this palce is hectic - a pridwatchers paradise. This is a very important nesting site for these birds and one of the few in the Delta. The species you are likely to see roosting here include the, marabou, yellow bill stork , open bill stork, cormorants darters, and slatey egrets. Kanana Camp regularly reports sightings of the rare Pel's fishing owl and also the shy and seldom seen situanga antelope, which live in swamps and are very good swimmers - taking to the water to evade predators such as leopards or wild dogs.
